Surgical, non-sterile face masks are intended to be worn over mouth and nose and they are a physical barrier for fluids and larger particles. They are used to prevent transmission of infectious agents from medical staff to patients during medical procedures, as well as transmission of infectious agents from mouths and noses of asymptomatic disease carriers or patients with clinical symptoms to healthy population. They are predominantly used in healthcare, during surgical procedures, to protect the users from spattered, potentially contaminated particles and liquids. They can be also used in emergency situations such as epidemics and pandemics, to reduce the risk of infection spreading. They are intended for single use.
